ARE HAMFESTS AND FLEA MARKETS STILL A USEFUL SOURCE FOR ELECTRONICS BARGAINS?

Next month is the Dayton Hamvention – the grand daddy of all the hamfests. Many Nuts & Volts readers will be there, as they have – some for decades. If you plan on going to this or other gatherings of electronics hobbyists this year, what are your reasons? Do you hope to find some unexpected treasures in the flea market? Attend an informative seminar? Preview new gear on the exhibit floor to fill out your wish list? Or just to hang out with like minded hobbyists and maybe swap a few stories? If you have gone in the past, but don’t anymore, why not?

Let's Hear Your Thoughts!

And as always, a HUGE thanks to our sponsors. Check 'em out!

That's It, Enjoy!

Wireless Modes

WIRELESS MODES - Part 1

If you employ a wireless data or voice link, you use modes, too!

Tune around different bands with a radio or spectrum analyzer, and you'll probably see and hear an awful lot of different signal types. Some are whistles, some are warbles or chirps, some sound like vacuum cleaners, and some even sound like voices if you have the right receiver. These different signals are called “modes”  — each with its own purpose, strengths, and weaknesses. Here is an overview of fundamental modes used in communication systems. Next time, we’ll cover more advanced modes used for data transmission.

ZEPPELIN DESIGN LABS - ALTURA MIDI THEREMIN

A theremin is a musical instrument that is played by waving one’s hands in midair over the instrument itself. Many describe the sound as uncanny, sinister, ghostly, unnatural, unearthly, supernatural, and/or otherworldly. This is also what makes theremins so cool.

The Arduino Graphics Interface

THE ARDUINO GRAPHICS INTERFACE - Part 2

Turn an Arduino Due and a leftover analog oscilloscope into a high resolution computer graphics display and gain valuable insights into computer graphics, digital-to-analog conversion (ADC), and advanced Direct Memory Access (DMA) hardware and software techniques. This time, we’ll complete the project by describing the details of the XYscope: the software libraries and sample code that make the AGI hardware easy to use and integrate into any graphics display application.

THE SOLAR ALTERNATIVE

Using Solar Cells On Small Projects Is A Bright Idea!

Efforts to design and construct devices for supplying renewable energy surprisingly began nearly 150 years ago, ironically, at the very height of the Industrial Revolution, which was largely founded on the promise of seemingly inexhaustible supplies of fossil fuels. Contrary to the prevailing opinion of the day, a number of engineers questioned the practice of an industrial economy based on nonrenewable energy and worried about what the world's nations would do after exhausting the fuel supply.
